Mary’s resolution was followed by a long debate. Tappan, for one, argued that this was not the time for the women to separate from the churches, and that they could accomplish more for the abolitionist cause by remaining in the churches and working from within. In spite of the debate, Mary’s resolution passed by a large majority. Still, the fact that it was not unanimously adopted was a disappointment, and continuing dissent made Mary a lightning rod in a brewing religious schism.

According to the “Fall River Letter,” the huge turnout of angry protesters had the Pennsylvania Hall managers unnerved. They appealed to Philadelphia Mayor John Swift for security. He refused to bring in police, citing that, “Ninety-nine out of a hundred of those with whom I converse are against you.” Arriving to survey the mob, the mayor stood before them and declared, “I would, fellow citizens, look upon you as my police.” It was hardly a comforting thought.
